Installation of The Quinta del Sordo series in Rome, NY
2009
In our post-modern era, the line between so-called "high art" and "low art" is constantly crossed. By working in the medium of latch-hook rug making (traditionally considered a craft or "low" art), I aim to further blur this distinction. By re-interpreting masterworks as rugs, a playful dialogue is opened between the original creators and myself. My recreations of these paintings are not perfect. The colors are only approximations, the detail is simplified. The mystique of these images, some of them lost through theft or acts of war, fuels our response to seeing them reproduced in such a way.
