In my paintings I use the texture of oil paint in combination with layered forms and shapes to create atmospheres on canvas. When I set out to paint, I let the moment guide my hand. The first brush stroke dictates the second brush stroke, and so on. I build on what I see as the life of the painting itself and the physical act of painting. Spatial ambiguity is created using varying degrees of opacity and translucency. I use the paintings own history in creating illusions with space as layers overlap to create new forms.Bio
A Buffalo native raised in Saratoga, New York, Begley returned to her hometown to acquire her MFA from The University of Buffalo. Her work has appeared in Buffalo at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, Big Orbit, Art Dialogue, and Hallwalls Gallery. Her work has exhibited across New York State at such galleries as Deep Space Gallery in New York City, the Vanderbilt Museum at Centerport, New York and Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center
in Auburn NY.
Among her accomplishments, Begley is a 1998 NYFA Fellow in the painting discipline. She was more recently awarded an individual artist grant from the Saltonstall Foundation
in 2007. In addition to her career as a painter she is the Label Manager at Ani DiFrancos Righteous Babe Records
