Starting from a science degree, it took me a long time to understand that I should be an artist. I have been a commercial photographer, oceanographic technician, a sailmaker, sailboat rigger, and successful sailboat racer. I have towed icebergs, sailed across the Atlantic, hiked much of the Western U.S., and traveled extensively. I'm half Jewish, half English, an immigrant married to a law professor, father of an American son, and a poet. All of this influences my work.
At present I am following two inter-related threads. One is to examine political and social questions through my own way of life and home. The other is to work with and against the plausibility of photographs to examine perception and representation. The result is several quite distinct bodies of work.
