I am a photographer and assemblage artist who is interested in evidence of humanity memories, stories, relics and remnants and how these reveal our identities and become maps of our existence and experiences.
My current photography work discusses the inner life of the psyche and transformations that occur while moving through stages of human development. I employ symbolical storytelling using the forms of dream, archetypes and myth and explore the unfolding of layers of identity through emotional reaction, physical sensation and body memory.
Charity Rae grew up in rural Pennsylvania where the starry sky was immense, the forest deep and alluring, and the nearest neighbor a speck over the hills. These roots instilled in her a value of quiet introspection and simplicity. Her vivid imagination and innate curiosity found a channel in the arts. She attended Edinboro University in Pennsylvania where she majored in photography. Charity now resides in Ithaca, New York where she has exhibited in several local galleries as well as The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, NY and The Rhino Gallery in New Orleans during the Prospect 1 Biennale in 2008 and the Art in a Box group exhibit in 2009. Charity was a selected artist in MARK, New York Foundation for the Arts professional practice program and a recipient of NYFAS Strategic Opportunity Stipend Grant. Other awards include third place in a photography contest by Ilford Photo and an Individual Artist Fellowship Grant from The Community Arts Partnership in Ithaca.
